Aspect of Verbs - Use Dynamic Particles “了2” to Express

变化态 — 用动态助词“了2”表示

The 了 at the end of the phrase (了2) signals a CHANGE OF STATE: something has just changed or is now different.

Phrase + 了 (at the end of the phrase)

How to use it

  • To signal a change: It's raining (it has started to rain).

Examples

吃了饭再去图书馆。

chī le fàn zài qù tú shū guǎn

Let's eat first, then go to the library.

他不来了。

tā bù lái le。

He doesn't come anymore (change).

春天来了。

chūntiān lái le

Spring has arrived.

我明白了。

wǒ míng bái le

I understand.

Notes and exceptions

  • 了2 (end of phrase) = change of state
  • 了1 (after the verb) = accomplishment.
  • : aspect particle. This particle serves to mark the action that has been completed or finished. Common combinations observed: 了 (aspect/changing), 不 (general negation).

Common mistakes

  • Confuse 我吃了饭 (I ate - accomplished) vs 我不吃了 (I don't eat anymore - change).
