The prepositional phrase (介宾短语) is formed by a preposition followed by its complement. It serves as a location indicator and is placed BEFORE the verb.

Examples

cóng běijīng lái

Come from Beijing.

Notes and exceptions

  • The prepositional phrase is placed BEFORE the verb (opposite of French).

Common mistakes

  • * I went to school → I study at school: the prepositional phrase precedes the verb.
