Notes and exceptions
- 吗 and a question word do not coexist: *谁来了吗? is incorrect.
- 吧 softens a phrase: 你是老师吧? (Are you a teacher, huh?).
- 吧: suggestion particle. This particle is used to formulate suggestions or polite requests.
- 了: aspect particle. This particle is used to mark the action that has been completed or finished. Common combinations observed: 了 (aspect/changement).
- 吗: interrogative particle. The particle "吗" is used to form limited-choice (yes/no) questions. Common combinations observed: 吗 (interrogation).
- 呢: question particle. The character "呢" is used in Chinese as a small phrase at the end of a question to show that one is waiting for a response or confirmation. Common combinations observed: 呢 (progressive/insistence), 不 (general negation).
Common mistakes
- *你叫什么名字吗? → 你叫什么名字?: no 了 with a question word.
