Structure
Verb + 了 (+ Number + Classifier + Object)
Elements
了
How to use it
- After the verb to signal the completed action.
- The object after 了 is often quantified: 我买了两本书.
- 了 can appear in the future: 明天我吃了饭就去 (tomorrow, after having eaten, I'll go).
Examples
我吃了一个苹果。
wǒ chī le yí ge píngguǒ。
I ate an apple.
我喝了两杯咖啡。
wǒ hē le liǎng kāfēi。
I drank two coffees.

Notes and exceptions
- 了 marks the COMPLETION, not the past itself.
- Without quantification, the sentence seems incomplete: 我买了书 → 我买了一本书 or 我买了书了.
- 了: aspect/achieved particle. This particle is used to mark the action that has been completed or finished. Common combinations observed: 了 (aspect/changement).
Common mistakes
- Don't confuse 了 after the verb (completeness) and 了 at the end of the sentence (state change).
