La comparaison : 比 bǐ

The comparison structure in Chinese is very different from the French 'plus... que'.

Example: 哥哥比我高。
Gēge bǐ wǒ gāo.
(My older brother is taller than me).

Points to note:

• Never put an intensity adverb like hěn (very) before the adjective in a structure with bǐ.
• To say 'much more', add 得多 (de duō) after the adjective: 他比我高得多。 (Tā bǐ wǒ gāo de duō.)
• To say 'even more', add 更 (gèng) before the adjective: 今天比昨天更冷。 (Jīntiān bǐ zuótiān gèng lěng.)
• To say 'not as... as', often use 没有 (méiyǒu): 我没有他高。 (Wǒ méiyǒu tā gāo.)
• To say 'as... as', often use 跟...一样 (gēn... yíyàng): 我跟他一样高。 (Wǒ gēn tā yíyàng gāo.)
